Every evening after the market closes, the exchanges publish a file most investors have never opened. It is a plain spreadsheet, one row per stock, and among the familiar columns of open, high, low, and close sits the delivery percentage, a figure almost nobody looks at. It is free and public, and it shows something a price chart cannot.

For a few weeks now, that number has been behaving unusually in one corner of the market. Before we get to which, it helps to understand what it is, because the whole signal rests on it.

What the Number Actually Measures

Every trade ends either as an intraday position or an overnight one. Intraday is when the buyer squares off before the close, taking a profit or a loss without ever meaning to hold overnight. An overnight position is when the trader lets it settle, taking actual delivery of the shares into their demat account.

Delivery percentage measures the second group: the share of the day’s traded volume that was delivered rather than squared off. A high reading means an unusually large proportion of participants chose to hold. A low reading means most of the activity was intraday churn, opened and closed before the bell.

One detail makes it meaningful. It is netted, so a trader who buys and sells the same stock within the day cancels out, and only the net position carried into settlement counts as delivery. A high reading is therefore not noise; it means shares were carried through to settlement instead of being squared off intraday. Both exchanges publish it free at the end of each day, the NSE in its daily bhavcopy and the BSE in its gross deliverables report, calculated the same way on each, delivered quantity divided by total traded quantity.

What It Tells You About a Single Stock

On its own, one high-delivery day means little; any single session can be an outlier. The signal appears if we stop looking at a single day and look at one stock over time. Ranking every session’s delivery against that stock’s own history, a pattern emerges. Most days sit in an ordinary middle band, a few sit far above it, and when those high days start clustering, especially at particular price levels, they suggest something more deliberate than ordinary trading.

The key is to judge a stock against itself. A reading of 45 percent might be extraordinary for one stock and ordinary for another, since stocks differ in ownership, float, and a stock’s normal range of delivery percentage. Comparing a stock to its own record, not to the market, is what turns a raw number into a signal.

Here is one stock read exactly that way, Cochin Shipyard, chosen only to show the method.

The shaded band is the stock’s ordinary range of delivery. The marked sessions are the days it pushed well above that range, when an unusually large share of volume settled into accounts rather than being squared off. Set against the price panel below, they show where in the price the holding happened. That is the whole method: not the level of delivery on any given day, but how far it sits above normal for that stock, and where it clusters.

From One Stock to a Sector

Most people look at delivery data in isolation, often for a single stock. Things get more interesting when we look at an entire sector instead. For example, rather than looking at only IRCTC, we look at the delivery data across the whole railway sector.

If the entire sector shows similar behaviour at the same time, it tells us something is moving through that sector, not just one company.

A sector moving together is a louder signal, but a harder one to read. It might mean investors are deliberately buying across the group. It might also just be money flowing into an index or a theme, or holders sitting on their positions instead of selling. Delivery data tells us shares are being held. It does not tell us why.

This Week, the Signal Is in Railways

The railway stocks have lit up together.

Each row in the chart is one railway stock. The strip runs left to right across the last several months, with one thin line for every trading day. The colour of each line tells you how high delivery was that day, judged against that stock’s own history: a dark red line is a high-delivery day, and a pale, muted red line is a low-delivery day. The part to look at is the right end of each row, the most recent sessions. There, the lines turn dark red across all four stocks at once, which means every one of them is seeing high delivery at the same time.

The numbers beside each row make it concrete. IRCTC’s latest delivery percentage reading sits at the 99th percentile of its own record, with 63 percent of the day’s volume settled. RAILTEL is at the 96th percentile, BEML at the 95th, and IRFC at the 92nd. All four sit near the very top of their own historical delivery ranges.

That consistency is what makes the pattern worth noticing. This is not one stock posting an isolated spike. It is several related names simultaneously settling an unusually large share of their trading volume into delivery.

A Sector Sitting Near Its Lows

What makes the pattern worth a second look is where the prices are while it happens.

These are not stocks running to new highs on excitement. Across the sector, the prices have spent the year falling. The basket is down roughly 10 to 37 percent year to date, with Rail Vikas Nigam the weakest at about 37 percent and RITES the most resilient at about 10 percent, and most of the group trading near the low end of its yearly range.

The sector ran strong over the past couple of years and has since given much of it back. So two observations sit on top of each other: the prices near the bottom of their range, the holding near the top of its own. Shares are being settled into accounts on exactly the sessions when the stocks look weakest on a price chart. That is the shape that shows up when a beaten-down group is being quietly bought and held, while the price gives little sign of it.

What the Data Does and Does Not Say

This is the part that is easy to get wrong, so it is worth being careful.

When a large share of a group’s volume settles into accounts while prices sit near their lows, it is fair to call it accumulation. Investors are taking delivery, choosing to own the shares at these levels rather than trade them. The word fits.

What it does not carry is any claim about the bottom. Accumulation does not mean a stock has stopped falling or that the price is about to turn. It means only that some investors are willing to buy and hold at these prices, which is a statement about them, not about the price. They can be early, and they can be wrong. A stock can be accumulated the whole way down, delivery high at every step, while the price keeps sliding. Willingness to buy at a level does not make it a floor.

There is one more reason for caution, a technical one. Not every share that shows up as delivery was bought to be held. Take BTST, buy today and sell tomorrow: the buyer still takes delivery today, because the shares are credited before they are sold, so on the day of purchase that trade is indistinguishable from genuine accumulation and counts fully toward delivery, even though it will be gone within a day. A single large block deal can distort a session the same way. Ranking a stock against its own history dampens this noise, but it does not remove it.

So the value of this number is not that it predicts. It is that it tells you where to look. This week it is pointing at the railways, while the sector sits near its lows. It tells you investors are willing to take delivery at these prices. Whether those investors are ultimately right is something only time and price can answer.

The Closing Bell

One last thing about this number, because it helps to know where it comes from.

Your broker shows you price and volume: what a stock traded at, and how many shares changed hands. The delivery percentage is not something your broker produces. It comes from the exchanges, and from the clearing corporations that sit behind them, NSE Clearing for the NSE and BSE Clearing Limited for the BSE. These are the bodies that settle trades.

Settling a trade just means making sure it is completed. When someone buys a share, someone else has to actually hand it over. After every trading day, the clearing corporation works out who is owed shares and who has to deliver them, then moves those shares from one demat account to another through the depositories, NSDL and CDSL. It is the machinery that makes sure no trade is left half done.

The delivery percentage falls straight out of that process. It is not a guess or an opinion about a stock. It is simply a count of how many shares actually ended up in someone’s account, instead of being traded in and out the same day.

That is why it is worth watching. Price and volume tell you how busy a stock was. Delivery tells you how much of that activity was real ownership changing hands. This week, that number was pointing at the railways.

There was a time when it took a real event to move the market. A central bank would change interest rates, or a finance minister would rise to read the budget, and prices would react. Those moments were scheduled, occasional, and mostly polite.

Lately, the market has changed. A single post from the head of one country, an offhand remark from the leader of another, a flare-up at a border, or even the rumour of a new virus can send prices swinging before the morning coffee has cooled.

But the real damage is rarely the price swing itself. It is what the swing does to us.

Imagine you invested in an index fund in January. By March, your portfolio is down 10%. Yet almost nothing about the companies you own has changed. What has changed is everything around them. Your screen is red. The headlines are grim. Selling suddenly feels like the sensible thing to do.

That is the pattern worth noticing. Markets do not become difficult simply because prices fall. They become difficult because fear rises, making temporary uncertainty feel like permanent damage.

All that swinging has a name: volatility. Better still, it can be measured. In India, that measure is India VIX. It rises when the market expects bigger moves and falls when calmer days are expected. In practice, it is also one of the best gauges of how nervous the market has become.

This week we’ll take volatility apart: what it is, where it shows up, the two forms it takes, and how investors and traders each read it. One idea ties it all together. Prices move every day. Emotions don’t. But when emotions do move, they leave their fingerprints all over volatility.

A number with a shape

Start with India VIX itself, across 2026.

It began the year quiet, drifting near 10, the kind of low reading that shows up when nobody expects much to happen. Then late February brought conflict in West Asia, and the line went almost vertical. By March 30 it reached nearly 29, its highest in a year. The market was braced for large daily swings, and it got them.

Then the long descent. A peace agreement signed on June 17 drained the last of the fear out, and by early July India VIX was back under 12, down close to 60% from the March peak.

That whole arc, the near-vertical climb and the slow bleed back, is fear arriving and then leaving. And here is what the “volatility is gone” story leaves out. Today’s reading is low compared with March. Compared with January, it is still higher. The number fell a long way, but it has not gone back to sleep.

Why the number jumps when the market falls

Volatility measures how much a price moves, not which way it moves. Picture two paths for the Nifty, both starting and ending at the same level. One drifts there gently. The other arrives through a series of sharp swings. They finish at the exact same price, but one was volatile and the other was not. Same destination, very different ride. Volatility is the width of that second path: it says nothing about where you end up, only how bumpy the trip was. When India VIX is high, the market is expecting a wide path. When it is low, a narrow one.

By definition, then, volatility is blind to direction. In real markets, direction and volatility are joined at the hip. Take 2026 a fortnight at a time and set each move in the Nifty beside the move in India VIX. Where the index is red, the fear reading turns green, and where the index rises, the fear reading fades. They run as opposites, panel after panel.

But look closer and the mirror is lopsided. In early March the Nifty fell 4.4% and India VIX jumped 38%. In mid-April the Nifty rose a larger 7.2%, and VIX fell just 33%. A bigger move up drew a smaller response than a smaller move down. This is why VIX is called the fear index and not the movement index. In theory it measures movement in both directions. In practice it leans one way, because we do. We do not weigh gains and losses evenly: a fall of a given size frightens us more than a rise of the same size reassures us. Volatility inherits that lopsidedness, growing loudest on the way down, because that is where the fear lives.

The whole world got scared at once

India’s reading did not spike alone.

Take India VIX, America’s VIX, and Japanese and Australian equivalents, set each to the same starting point so their shapes can be compared, and lay them on top of one another. The striking thing is how little of the story belongs to India. The same late-February jump, the same spring peak, the same summer fade appear on every line.

There are differences in height. India ran hotter at the peak, and by early July America’s reading sat higher than ours. But the shape is shared. Volatility is usually a mood the whole world is in, not a local event. A calm Indian market is generally a calm world, and a frightened one rarely panics by itself.

Smaller company, wilder weather

That shared mood is still one number laid over everything. Zoom back into India and volatility is not a single climate but several, and they turn wilder the further down the market you travel.

Sort the market into its broad size tiers and the pattern is orderly. Among the Nifty 50, the largest and most heavily traded companies, the typical stock’s realized volatility sits near 22%. Step down to the Nifty Next 50 and the middle rises to 28%. The midcaps sit near 30%. The smallcaps near 34%, and their tail runs far higher, with individual names moving at two or three times the pace of a steady large-cap.

The reason is familiar even if the numbers are not. The big names carry the weight of index funds, steady institutional ownership and constant coverage, all of which smooth their path. The smaller a company, the thinner its trading and the larger any single piece of news looms, so its price lurches where a large-cap would drift, and the wildest readings of all tend to belong to whichever small name is caught up in a story of its own. The one volatility figure on the ticker is really a large-cap figure. It describes the calm top of the market well and the restless floor beneath it hardly at all.

Two kinds of volatility

We have treated volatility as one thing. It is really two, and the split lines up almost exactly with how investors and traders each look at the market.

Realized volatility is history. It measures how much a price has already moved, worked out straight from past prices. This is the investor’s version of volatility. It is memory, the size of the last scare, and it shapes how risky the market feels right now. When the January investor watched the portfolio fall and felt the urge to sell, that was realized volatility doing its work, backward-looking and felt as fear.

Implied volatility is expectation. It is worked backwards out of option prices, and it reflects how much the market thinks a price will move from here. This is the trader’s version. It looks forward, and the trader is not really asking how risky the market feels. The trader is asking what that expected movement costs.

Across the Nifty 50, most dots land above the line, with implied volatility sitting a little higher than realized. That tilt is normal: options tend to carry a small premium for the movement that might still come. The outliers tell the sharper story.

WIPRO sits high above the line, its options bracing for a swing far larger than the stock has actually made, the kind of gap a trader would call expensive. INFY sits at the far corner below it: it has moved more than almost anything else in the index lately, yet its options now expect noticeably less, which makes that expected movement look cheap.

Two IT names, opposite readings. That gap from the line, expected minus actual, is what a trader watches most closely. Same number, two readings: to the investor, how frightening things feel; to the trader, whether that fear is worth paying for.

The Closing Bell

“Volatility is low” is a fair description of the market today. It is also the least interesting thing you can say about volatility.

The number has a shape, and the shape follows real events. It ignores direction, yet rises mostly when prices fall. It moves across the whole world at once. It hides enormous variety between individual stocks. And it comes in two forms, one measured and one expected. The figure on the ticker is only the surface. Almost everything worth knowing about volatility is in what that figure is quietly averaging over.

The next time a drawdown has your attention, remember that volatility is shaping what you see and feel. Sometimes the businesses you own carry no real stress of their own. But markets are wired together, and a shock elsewhere in the world, or one large event, can reach your portfolio anyway.

Traders sit on the other side of the same number. A high VIX cheers options sellers, who see the fat premiums that fear puts on the table. But a high reading is also the market bracing for large moves, and if those moves arrive, the loss can run well past the premium collected. The fear that pays the seller is the same fear that can sink them.

Either way, reading volatility well changes the decision in front of you, and learning to see it stock by stock, rather than as a single number on the ticker, is what turns it from background noise into information.

Calm is not the absence of volatility. It is volatility resting at the quiet end of its own range.

If you follow the markets even loosely, you know how it goes. Every week is eventful in its own way. You see headlines like the Nifty moved 2%, FIIs pulled out money, and a sector rallied out of nowhere.

But the more time I spent looking at charts and data, the more I realised the headline number almost never tells you the real story.

The interesting part is always underneath the number.

That is what Delta is about. Every Wednesday, I will pick one development from the week and pull it apart using data and charts to explain not just what moved, but what was actually going on.

I hope you all find it useful.

A senior market hand at the Varsity desk, Nithin Sasikumar, who writes the ‘Tell Me Why’ newsletter, sprung a Tell Me Why (or maybe a Tell Me How?) on me last week: ‘If Nifty 50 is down around 7%, how do you think Nifty Next 50 has performed?’

The first answer came quickly. Probably similar, maybe a little less. Both are large-cap indices. They should broadly rhyme.

The answer was wrong. Nifty Next 50 was actually up 4%.

What made it interesting wasn’t the gap. It was how obvious the wrong answer felt.

The chart that started the conversation

Two indices, same large-cap label, same market, same year, moving in completely opposite directions since April. Nifty 50 down 7%. Nifty Next 50 up 4%. An 11 percentage point gap, quietly opening up while most people were watching the headline number fall.

“Large caps are down” was technically true. It was also quietly misleading.

Same label. Different insides

To understand why, you have to look under the hood.

The gaps are striking. Financials make up 35% of the Nifty 50. In the Nifty Next 50, that number drops to 20%. IT is 8.5% in Nifty 50 and barely present in Nifty Next 50. Oil & Gas is 10% in Nifty 50 versus 7% in Nifty Next 50.

Flip to the other side. Capital Goods is 17% of Nifty Next 50 and only 1.4% of Nifty 50. Power is 11.7% in Nifty Next 50 versus 2.9% in Nifty 50.

These aren’t small differences. They’re structural. Nifty 50 is anchored by Financials, IT, and Oil & Gas. Nifty Next 50 is anchored by Capital Goods and Power. When those two groups move in opposite directions, the indices will too, even if everyone keeps calling them both large caps.

The sectors told the story first

Power is up 19%. Capital Goods up 17%. Telecom up 14%. Healthcare up 14%. Metals up 10%.

Now look at the other side. IT is down 26%. Oil & Gas down 8%. FMCG down 6%. Auto down 4%. Financials down 3%.

The market didn’t fall uniformly. It split. The sectors anchoring Nifty 50 went one way. The sectors anchoring Nifty Next 50 went the other. The aggregate number averaged over both and told you neither story cleanly.

Follow the institutional footprints

The sector performance chart shows what happened. The FII flows data starts to show why.

FIIs pulled over ₹2,87,000 Cr from Indian equities in 2026. But look at where within that aggregate the money actually moved.

Financial Services: -₹1,11,000 Cr. Close to 40% of all FII selling came from a single sector. IT: -₹34,000 Cr. Oil & Gas: -₹27,000 Cr. These are precisely the sectors that dominate Nifty 50.

Now look at the other side. Capital Goods saw consistent inflows across most fortnights, +₹21,000 Cr YTD. Sovereign Bonds +₹63,000 Cr, with the bulk arriving in June after government reforms opened India’s debt market further to foreign participation. Metals & Mining +₹13,000 Cr.

“FIIs are selling” was the headline. The actual story was more specific: FIIs were reducing exposure to Financials and IT, and quietly adding to Capital Goods and Metals. The sectors they were selling anchored Nifty 50. The sectors they were buying anchored Nifty Next 50.

Weight is everything

Each bubble is a stock. The size is market cap, the x-axis is YTD performance, and the y-axis is index weight.

HDFCBANK sits at around -16% YTD with close to 11% index weight. RELIANCE at -17% with around 8% weight. INFY at -32% with close to 4% weight. These three stocks alone account for nearly a quarter of Nifty 50. When they fall together, the index doesn’t have many places to hide.

Compare that to the Nifty Next 50 constituents. ADANIPOWER up 46%. CUMMINSIND up 22%. MOTHERSON up 17%. Smaller individual weights, but all moving in the same direction.

The Closing Bell

“The market is falling” isn’t wrong. It’s just a sentence that compresses a lot of moving parts into a few words.

Some sectors have been in freefall. Some are flat. Some quietly made their lows in March and have been recovering ever since. The aggregate number smooths over all of it and hands you one clean figure that tells you less than it appears to.

Indices don’t rise and fall equally. They rise and fall according to what they’re made of.

When someone says “the market is down”, the next question is usually the important one:

Which market?

That’s usually where the actual story lives.
